Winter pool cover being pulled off an inground pool in spring in central Ohio
Columbus pool service

Spring pool openings

An Ohio pool comes out of winter needing more than the cover pulled off. Here is what an opening covers.

What an opening includes

The cover comes off, gets cleaned and folded, and goes away dry so it is not a mildew problem in the garage. Then the plugs come out, the returns and skimmer go back together, and the equipment gets reassembled: pump drain plugs, filter, chlorinator, heater, and every valve back in a running position.

The system gets started and watched. That is when the winter damage shows itself, a cracked pump lid, a split union, a heater header that froze, a dripping valve. Better to find it in May with the deck dry than in July with a party coming.

Then the water. Spring water is usually cold, cloudy and chemically nowhere, so it gets tested and balanced, then shocked and given the circulation time it needs to clear. It rarely goes clear the same afternoon, and anybody who tells you otherwise has not opened many Ohio pools.

  • Cover off, cleaned and folded away dry
  • Plugs out, skimmer and returns reassembled with fresh gaskets where needed
  • Pump, filter, heater and chlorinator reassembled and started
  • System watched under pressure for leaks and freeze damage
  • Water tested, balanced and shocked, with a plan to get it clear

When to open in central Ohio

Earlier than most people think. Once daytime temperatures are consistently in the sixties, the water under a cover starts growing algae whether the pool is open or not, and every week of that is more work and more chemical to undo. Late April into May is the sweet spot here.

Waiting until Memorial Day weekend is the single most common reason a pool is still green on the Fourth of July. It is also the busiest weekend of the year for every pool company in Franklin County.

We had a wonderful experience with fox pools. Patti, rhe owner of the company, responded quickly to my call for help with my pool. We needed a new liner because of tree root problems. Within a couple of weeks we had a pool again! Patti and her team were fantastic. They were very easy to work with and very professional, and very reasonable! Thank you FOX POOLS

I have worked with Fox Pools for several years now. I was new to owning a pool and they came and taught me how to take care of it. In addition to opening and closing my pool each season, they have been extremely reliable with helping me as problems have come up. Trustworthy and professional totally describe my experience. I have recommended them to many people.

This was the first time using Fox Swimming Pool Services and so glad I took the chance. I was looking for a new company to service our pool and after reading the reviews, I decided to have them close the pool. I can't say enough great things about Patti the owner and Tessa who came out with her team to close the pool. So professional and polite. Definitely will be using Fox for all my pool service needs!! A++

Patti and team are very easy to work with. Great communication and excellent service. The team was very thorough in their work, and communicated very clearly. I transitioned to this pool company from another pool company. Night and day difference. They fixed several little things from the prior pool company as a courtesy during our heater and pool cover installs. Highly recommend these guys.

Fox Pools sent Cameron and Shea out to look at damage to PVC caused in the winter and to help us make the switch to Salt system. They took pictures asked great questions, got us an estimate and then scheduled to make the repairs and upgrades while having to fabricate some parts for our old heat pump.

Depends on how the water came through winter. A pool that was closed clean and balanced can be swimmable in a couple of days. A green one takes longer and we will tell you which one you have.

Yes. Safety covers, solid covers and mesh covers all come off, get cleaned and get stored dry.

We go over that when we price the opening for your pool. Every pool needs a different amount depending on how it wintered.

Yes, and we will tell you straight what we find. A pool closed by somebody else is not automatically a problem, it just needs a proper look.

We photograph the roof and show you. If pool openings is not what the roof needs, we say so and quote the work it does need.
