Safety cover or winter cover
A winter cover is the solid tarp held down by water bags. It is cheaper, it keeps light out, and it is a nuisance: bags split, the cover sags into the water, and it collects a pond of leaves and rain that has to be pumped off all winter. It is also not a safety device.
A safety cover anchors into brass fittings set flush in the deck and stretches drum tight across the pool on straps. It holds the weight of a person, sheds snow, lets rain through if it is mesh, and comes off in spring in one piece instead of a wet folded mess. On a pool with children, a dog, or any chance of either, that is the one worth buying.

Freeform pools and odd shapes
A rectangle is easy. A freeform with a raised wall on one side, a diving board, a slide and a set of steps at the shallow end is a pattern job, and the measurements have to be right the first time because covers are cut to order.

A properly anchored and tensioned safety cover is designed to. It is not a diving board, but it is the difference between a scare and an emergency.
Mesh lets rain and snowmelt through so there is nothing to pump off, and passes a little light. Solid keeps everything out and needs a cover pump. Most Ohio homeowners end up on mesh.

The brass anchors set in the deck usually outlive the cover. They stay when the cover gets replaced.
