Liner replacement in Columbus

Most of the pools in central Ohio are vinyl liner pools, and a liner has a working life. Here is how a replacement actually goes.

How a liner replacement runs

It starts with a measure. A liner is cut for one pool and one pool only, so the depths, the radiuses, the steps, the swimouts and the light niche all get measured before anything is ordered. Get that wrong and the liner fights the wall for the rest of its life.

On install day the water comes out, the old liner comes off the track, and the shell underneath gets looked at properly. That is the part homeowners never see: rust at the bottom of a steel wall panel, a hollow under the vermiculite floor, a foot of standing groundwater behind the deep end. Anything wrong there is fixed before the new liner goes in, because covering it up just means doing this again sooner.

The new liner is hung, set with a vacuum so it pulls tight into every corner, then the faceplates, gaskets, skimmer, returns and main drain go back on and the fill starts. The vacuum stays on until there is enough water to hold the liner where it belongs.

  • Every dimension measured on site before the liner is ordered
  • Wall panels, floor and track inspected with the pool empty
  • Liner set with a vacuum so it seats into the corners and coves
  • New gaskets and faceplates at the skimmer, returns and main drain
  • Fill supervised so the liner does not shift while the water comes up

When a liner is done

The obvious one is a tear, but most liners get replaced before they tear. The vinyl goes brittle and chalky, the pattern fades out along the waterline, the bead starts pulling out of the track in the corners, and wrinkles show up on the floor that no amount of brushing takes out. A liner that has gone hard will split the first time somebody catches it with a pole.

Central Ohio adds two more. Freeze and thaw works on the shell every winter, and tree roots off a maple or a silver maple push against a wall panel until the liner has nowhere to sit flat. One of Fox's own reviews is a liner that had to be replaced because of root damage.

What you get to pick

The pattern and the tile band are yours to choose, and they change how the water reads more than people expect. A dark bottom pulls heat and makes a pool look deeper. A light print shows less dirt and more leaves. Mosaic waterline bands hide the scale line that hard Columbus water leaves.

The liner gauge matters too. A heavier gauge costs more and takes more abuse from a dog, a pool brush or a family of teenagers. Fox measures the pool, prices it in person, and shows the samples before anything is ordered.

I have worked with Fox Pools for several years now. I was new to owning a pool and they came and taught me how to take care of it. In addition to opening and closing my pool each season, they have been extremely reliable with helping me as problems have come up. Trustworthy and professional totally describe my experience. I have recommended them to many people.

This was the first time using Fox Swimming Pool Services and so glad I took the chance. I was looking for a new company to service our pool and after reading the reviews, I decided to have them close the pool. I can't say enough great things about Patti the owner and Tessa who came out with her team to close the pool. So professional and polite. Definitely will be using Fox for all my pool service needs!! A++

Patti and team are very easy to work with. Great communication and excellent service. The team was very thorough in their work, and communicated very clearly. I transitioned to this pool company from another pool company. Night and day difference. They fixed several little things from the prior pool company as a courtesy during our heater and pool cover installs. Highly recommend these guys.

Fox Pools sent Cameron and Shea out to look at damage to PVC caused in the winter and to help us make the switch to Salt system. They took pictures asked great questions, got us an estimate and then scheduled to make the repairs and upgrades while having to fabricate some parts for our old heat pump.

Questions

Questions about this.

Eight to twelve years is the range most vinyl liners run in this climate, depending on sun exposure, water chemistry and how the pool is winterized. Chronically low pH shortens it a lot.

A lot of them go in and start filling the same day. It depends on what the empty shell shows and how the weather is behaving. If something needs repair underneath, we tell you before we start.

For the measure, it helps. For the install, someone should be reachable, since decisions get made once the pool is empty.

Sometimes. Patterns get discontinued. We bring samples and find the closest, and most people end up picking something they like better anyway.

Filling a pool is a real amount of water. Some Columbus area homeowners have it trucked in, some run the hose. We talk through both when we quote it.

We photograph the roof and show you. If vinyl liner replacement is not what the roof needs, we say so and quote the work it does need.
